Granite as a natural stone is composed largely of quartz, feldspar and mica; its mineralogy, porosity and grain structure determine resistance to thermal cycling, freeze‑thaw, biological growth and chemical attack. These factors influence how memorials — headstones, ledger slabs and freestanding monuments — will evolve over a 50‑year service life.
Dark, dense granites with low porosity typically show the least visible change. Polished jet‑black and deep blue granites maintain color and sheen longer because they contain fewer iron‑bearing minerals that oxidize and stain. However, even these stones can exhibit micro‑etching and loss of polish where acid rain or airborne pollutants are prevalent. Light‑colored granites and those with higher feldspar content are more prone to surface roughening, staining from iron oxides, and biological colonization in humid climates. Manufacturing processes strongly affect long‑term weathering. Proper block selection during quarrying minimizes inclusion of veins and fractures that can become failure points. Precision cutting with diamond wire and CNC fabrication produces accurate tolerances and reduces internal stress. Surface finishes — polished, honed, flamed or sandblasted — each age differently: polished finishes retain reflectivity but show fine scratches; sandblasted faces reveal deeper grain structure and can accumulate biological material more readily.
