Material sourcing options

We source stone through a combination of selected quarry investments and established quarry and supplier partnerships. Origin, current lot, sample match, finish and availability are reviewed for each order.

Custom Color Matching

Send a photo, catalogue reference or physical sample so we can review possible materials. A photograph alone cannot prove the exact stone identity; the proposed source, current lot, finish and sample match are confirmed before approval.

Material samples on request

One 15 × 15 cm stone colour and finish sample is free of charge; the buyer pays international courier cost. Confirm the requested stone, finish and destination. The current production lot is reviewed separately.

Popular Monument Granites

These materials are common reference options for monument projects. Current source, lot, dimensions, sample match, and production availability are confirmed for each inquiry.

Shanxi Black — sample by source

Sample review

A dark, fine-grain appearance is commonly requested for upright monuments. Confirm the proposed source, current lot, finish and engraving result against the approved sample.

Laser Etching: Sample and contrast test recommended

Impala Black (South Africa)

Common European reference

Medium-grain charcoal black with subtle speckles. It can be reviewed for hand-carved European-style monuments; confirm the proposed lot and carving result.

Laser Etching: Test the proposed sample; no universal contrast rating

Black Galaxy — sample by source

Decorative option

Jet black with golden flecks that can create a decorative contrast. Confirm the source, finish and current-lot sample for the intended memorial.

Laser Etching: Test the proposed sample

G654 Padang Dark

Production reference

Dark gray with fine speckles. It is often evaluated for flat markers, companion sets and volume programs; price and suitability are confirmed per order.

Laser Etching: Test the proposed sample

Bahama Blue

Specialty

Distinctive blue-gray with crystalline shimmer. It can be reviewed for decorative monuments and custom projects; availability and suitability are confirmed per order.

Aurora / Multicolor Red / Tan Brown

Custom Orders

We can review additional available varieties, including Maple Red, Tropical Green, Silver Cloud and Paradiso. Source, current lot, finish and production availability must be confirmed for the order.

Approve the stone, finish and sample

Material approval checklist

  • Material: Natural granite; source, lot and acceptance criteria confirmed per order
  • Finishes: Polished, rock-pitched, sawn or sandblasted; finish sample confirmed per order
  • Carving and engraving: Test the chosen finish and artwork on a representative sample.
  • Standards: Inspection is carried out against the buyer-approved drawing and order specification. Tolerances, gloss targets and acceptance criteria are agreed for the stone, finish and project.

Record the approved material

  • Material evidence: Record the proposed source, current lot, sample ID, finish, artwork revision and buyer approval in the quotation or order file.

Material approval

Stone colour, surface finish and engraving questions

Use appearance charts to choose a direction, then approve the actual material, finish and intended artwork.

Why can the angel and polished body look different when they use the same stone?

Surface finish changes how light reflects from the stone, so the same material can look darker, lighter or more textured.

A polished body and a sandblasted carved figure may show a deliberate contrast. The same principle applies to grey and red granites, although the result varies with the actual material, lighting and finish. Approve representative finished samples for the order.

Surface finish and sample approval
Finish Typical visual effect What to approve
Polished Often deeper-looking colour with a reflective surface Show the actual polish and proposed lettering / image contrast.
Sandblasted Usually a more matte, lighter-looking texture Approve the textured area, depth and its boundary with polished faces.
Bush-hammered Dimpled texture that changes the visible colour Specify where the texture is required and approve a sample.
Flamed Rough, often lighter-looking surface where suitable Confirm suitability for the particular stone, component and thickness.
Natural split / rock face Irregular texture and shadows Agree the permitted profile and distinguish it from flamed work.

Which is better for engraving: small-grain or medium-grain India Black?

Choose the proposed lot that produces the approved result with your actual artwork and engraving method.

Grain description alone cannot establish the winner. Compare two labelled current-lot samples with the same image, prepared surface and controlled settings. Review fine lettering, portrait detail, background pattern and contrast. Record the result rather than assigning a universal quality ranking.

How should two black granite batches be compared?

Keep the artwork and test conditions comparable, then record the identity and outcome for each sample.

A useful record includes sample and lot IDs, stated source, finish, artwork revision, engraving method, settings, dry/wet condition, lighting, date, close-up photographs and the buyer’s decision. A colour swatch chart or a finish illustration is not a two-batch engraving test.

Are similar commercial stone names proof of the same source?

No. A similar name or appearance does not establish the same quarry, origin or performance.

Keep the supplied stone description and origin distinct from a colour comparison. For example, Polycor identifies BARRE GRAY™ with Barre, Vermont, USA; a Chinese grey stone should not be represented as that source solely because its appearance is compared with it. Confirm the material code against the current sample and supplier documentation.

See the quarry owner’s BARRE GRAY™ description →

Are India Black and Black Galaxy interchangeable names?

They should be specified separately and checked against their actual samples.

The supplied material range distinguishes small-grain India Black, medium-grain India Black and Black Galaxy. A generic label such as “black granite” does not define grain, flecks, source, finish or engraving performance. Use the specific approved sample in the quotation.

Can I order from a colour chart alone?

A colour chart is useful for a shortlist; the current material and required finish should be approved separately.

Screen display, photography, quarry source and natural batch variation affect appearance. One 15 × 15 cm stone colour and finish sample is free of charge; international courier cost is paid by the buyer. Identify the requested material and finish when asking for it.

Evidence and standards

How to request a material review

Material names and trade names are not test results. Ask for the current lot reference, approved sample, finish result and any available laboratory or supplier record that applies to the order. Natural variation, sample size and production timing must be recorded in the purchase file.

Boda Stone provides company and order records within the agreed scope. A general material label does not replace a buyer-approved sample or a destination-specific technical requirement.
