For repeated shapes, CNC machining can help keep pieces consistent. Hand finishing is useful for fine details, curved transitions and sculpted features. Many designs use both. As a buyer, start with the finished look you want, then agree on a drawing and a sample or first piece before the rest of the order is made.

What to approve before production

  1. Approve the final drawing, dimensions, finish details and artwork.
  2. Identify which details require a sample or first-piece approval.
  3. Agree which dimensions to measure and what variation is acceptable for this design.
  4. Inspect the finished piece, not only the machine program.
  5. Retain the approved files for repeat orders.

Workshop safety matters too

Cutting, grinding and carving stone can create respirable crystalline silica. A buyer audit can include dust-control practices, equipment maintenance and housekeeping evidence. Workplace obligations depend on the country and operation; OSHA guidance is a useful primary reference for US requirements.

Specify the finished result, not only the machine label

For a wholesale monument order, the useful question is which method can deliver the approved shape and dimensions, lettering, relief, edge and surface result in the selected stone. A CNC path may be followed by hand refinement, and a hand-carved feature may still require machine cutting or polishing around it.

Design element Input to provide What to check
Profiles and repeat dimensions Approved drawing, units and edge details Measured first piece or inspection record
Portraits and reliefs Reference image, depth intent and viewing distance Approved sample or progress photos
Lettering and ornament Vector or high-resolution artwork, font and finish Artwork proof and sample panel
Surface and edge finish Polished, honed, steeled or other finish reference Photos with light from the side, plus a visual check

What to send for advice on carving

Send your drawing or artwork, stone choice, sizes, quantities and finish requirements. Tell us which details matter most and whether you expect repeat orders. We can discuss the carving method and agree on measurements and a first-piece check.

Send CAD or reference artwork for a method and first-piece review.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is CNC always more precise than hand carving?

CNC can improve repeatability, but accuracy still depends on the drawing, setup, tools, stone condition and final inspection.

Does hand carving make every monument more valuable?

No. Value depends on the approved design, execution and customer need, not the production label alone.

Should buyers approve a first piece?

Use a first-piece or detail sample when the design, material or finish has not been produced under the agreed specification before.
